The state prison of ancient Athens is an elongated building of unusual design located just southwest of the main Agora. Built around the middle of the fifth century before Christ, the structure features a long central corridor flanked by eight small, square rooms—five on one side and three on the other—that open into a courtyard to the south. It sits at the junction of two ancient roads, tucked near the area known as the Industrial Quarter.
