The Academy of Athens is identifiable by the two tall Ionic columns flanking its entrance, which are topped by large statues of the goddess Athena and the god Apollo. Below them, seated marble figures of the philosophers Plato and Socrates wait at the entrance of the building. Constructed of gleaming Pentelic marble, this neoclassical structure is the centerpiece of the so-called Athenian Trilogy, which also includes the nearby university and the national library.
