Monastiraki Square

Monastiraki Square is defined by the contrasting presence of the small, tenth-century Church of Panagia Pantanassa and the grander, stone-built Tzistarakis Mosque. The square takes its name from this church, which once served as the primary building for a monastery that occupied the site. Over time, the monastery’s influence waned until only the church remained, and locals began calling the area Monastiraki, or "little monastery."
