Pondy Bazaar is defined by the dense, buzzing stretch of shops lining Sir Theagaraya Road, where narrow storefronts and overflowing displays spill onto wide pedestrian pathways. Originally a quiet residential expansion during the nineteen twenties, the area transitioned into a commercial hub after nineteen thirty-three, when a merchant named Chokkalinga Mudhaliar built the first ten shops here. He named the site to honor his native home of Pondicherry, a name that stuck even as the bazaar grew to dominate the local retail landscape.
