Chaukhandi Stupa Sarnath, (Varanasi)

monument

The Chaukhandi Stupa is a tall, tiered brick mound crowned by an eight-sided Mughal tower. This structure marks the location where Siddhartha Gautama, after reaching enlightenment in Bodh Gaya, is said to have reunited with his five original companions. These ascetics had previously left him at Rajgir, but they encountered him here as he traveled toward Sarnath to deliver his first sermon.
