The Dhamek Stupa is a massive, solid cylinder of brick and stone that rises forty-three point six meters above the grounds of Sarnath. Unlike the hemispherical domes common to many ancient Buddhist monuments, this structure maintains a straight, cylindrical form. Its lower section is encased in heavy red sandstone blocks, which are decorated with intricate floral and geometric carvings and eight niches that once held statues.
