Tombe dei Glossatori

The Tombe dei Glossatori are a series of thirteen-century funerary monuments that stand out for their unusual design. These stone sarcophagi are lifted above the ground on slender marble columns, topped with canopies and pyramid-shaped roofs. They were built to honor the professors of the University of Bologna who were known as glossators. These scholars gained renown for their practice of writing notes or glosses in the margins of ancient Roman law texts to clarify and explain them.
