The Arch of Septimius Severus is a massive, triple-arched monument of white marble that rises twenty-three meters above the northwestern end of the Roman Forum. Completed in two hundred three A.D., it was built to honor the military victories of Emperor Septimius Severus and his sons, Caracalla and Geta, against the Parthian Empire. Eight deep-fluted columns of Proconnesian marble stand on high pedestals before the arch, supporting an attic that once held a gilded chariot pulled by six horses.
