Palazzo Barberini is a seventeenth-century Baroque palace that extends its wings toward the piazza like an open, U-shaped embrace. Built starting in sixteen twenty-five for the newly elected Pope Urban VIII, the structure broke from the traditional, block-like design of Roman Renaissance palaces to incorporate the sprawling, villa-style layout of a country estate.
