The building at number fifty-two on Via Giulia is a long, heavy structure that occupies the site of the Carceri Nuove, or New Prisons, commissioned by Pope Innocent the Tenth in sixteen fifty-five. Designed by the architect Antonio del Grande, these cells were built to provide a more humane alternative to the cramped, existing facilities of the time. You can identify the former prison by its massive, imposing scale, which still dominates this stretch of the historic street.
