Mattatoio

The Mattatoio is a massive complex of low-slung, red-brick pavilions identifiable by the statue above its main entrance, which depicts a youth wrestling a bull to the ground. Designed by architect Gioacchino Ersoch and completed in eighteen ninety, this facility was built to replace Rome’s older slaughterhouses with a single, highly efficient industrial plant. It was strategically placed at the foot of Monte Testaccio to keep the city's meat processing away from the residential center while maintaining proximity to the Tiber River for transport.
