Chiesa della Magione

religious

The Chiesa della San Pietro alla Magione sits on via Camollia as a small, stone Romanesque structure reached by a front staircase. Documents record a church on this site as early as the year nine hundred ninety-eight, long before it was enclosed by the city walls. In the twelfth century, the Knights Templar took control of the complex, establishing a hospice to offer rest to pilgrims traveling toward Rome and the Holy Land. The name Magione itself comes from the Latin term for a stopping place or mansion.
