Piazza del Mercato sits directly behind the Palazzo Pubblico and the city’s civic bell tower, Torre del Mangia. It is distinguished by the Tartarugone, a large, covered market structure completed in eighteen eighty-four. This pavilion is supported by thirty-two octagonal brick pillars and features a wooden roof, designed by engineer Giuseppe Cantucci to provide a sheltered space for vendors.
