Itsukushima Jinja

religious

Itsukushima Jinja is distinguished by its vermilion corridors and main buildings that appear to hover above the sea at high tide. Built in a small inlet on the island of Miyajima, the complex connects separate halls with boardwalks supported by pillars driven into the seabed. The site’s most recognizable feature, a fifty-foot-tall torii gate, stands offshore in the Seto Inland Sea, constructed of decay-resistant camphor wood.
