Hōnenin Temple

Hōnenin Temple features a distinctive, moss-covered thatched gate. Tucked into the wooded hillside at the edge of the city, this sanctuary was established in sixteen eighty to honor the monk Hōnen, who resided in a small hermitage on the site centuries earlier. His teachings shifted Japanese Buddhism toward a simpler, more accessible path to enlightenment, and the temple grounds were built as a memorial to his life and practice.
