The Naramachi Shiryo-kan Museum is recognized by the distinct red, monkey-shaped amulets known as migawari-zaru hanging from its eaves. These charms are modeled after the messengers of the deity Koshin-san and are traditionally displayed to ward off illness and disaster. The museum itself is a private institution established in nineteen eighty-five to preserve the local history and culture of the Naramachi district, an area long characterized by its wooden merchant houses and narrow alleys.
