Jōganji Temple sits in Nakano as an island of greenery, recognizable by the quiet, shaded space it carves out against the surrounding urban concrete. Founded in fourteen thirty-eight, this Soto Zen temple was established by a wealthy merchant named Suzuki Kuro, who locals called the Nakano Chōja, or the rich man of Nakano.
