The Parliament of Kenya is defined by a distinctive clock tower that was added to its design to echo the appearance of Big Ben in London. Built in nineteen fifty-four, the complex initially housed the Legislative Council of the Kenya Colony. The architect, Amyas Connell, had originally proposed a modern design, but colonial authorities insisted on the clock tower to project a sense of British parliamentary tradition. A foundation stone from the United Kingdom Parliament, recovered from the ruins of a nineteen forty-one air raid, was incorporated into the building to signify the bond between the nations.
