Bastejkalna Park is a long, narrow green space distinguished by a curving ridge and terraced slopes that trace the path of Riga’s old defensive fortifications. This artificial hill, known as Bastion Hill, remains from the city's former earthwork ramparts. In the middle of the nineteenth century, when these bastions and moats lost their military purpose, the city began demolishing the walls and re-landscaping the ground into a public park.
