Delfshaven is a pocket of pre-war architecture defined by its historic harbor and canal-side buildings, standing in contrast to the modern landscape of surrounding Rotterdam. It was founded in thirteen eighty-nine as a port for the city of Delft, situated to bypass tolls on the Maas River. The neighborhood retains a traditional atmosphere from its era as a center for herring fishing and gin distilling.
