De Pier is a steel and concrete structure extending three hundred eighty-two meters into the North Sea. It is recognizable by its unusual two-level design and the series of platforms, or islands, built on stilts above the waves. This modern construction, opened in nineteen fifty-nine, replaced an earlier wooden pier that stood on the same coastline until it was dismantled during the Second World War.
