The Small Wild Goose Pagoda is a square, thirteen-story brick structure that rises into a graceful, slightly curved profile often compared to an emerging bamboo shoot. Built between seven hundred seven and seven hundred nine during the Tang Dynasty, this pagoda once stood within the Jianfu Temple to house Buddhist scriptures brought from India by the monk Yi Jing. Its construction was funded by imperial concubines and court maids after the monk appealed to the throne for help in preserving the sacred texts he had gathered.
