Huaca Pucllana rises as a massive, seven-tiered adobe pyramid surrounded by the modern apartment buildings and busy streets of Miraflores. Built between two hundred and seven hundred A.D. by the Lima culture, this ceremonial and administrative center stands apart for its unique construction. Its builders molded millions of clay and sand bricks, laying them vertically in a bookshelf-style pattern. This design created flexible gaps that allowed the structure to withstand centuries of powerful earthquakes that would have collapsed more rigid buildings.
