The Chafariz da Rua de O Século is defined by its triangular pediment and the three bronze masks that release water into a deep stone basin. Built in seventeen sixty-two, this eighteenth-century fountain was designed by the engineer Carlos Mardel as part of a grander effort to modernize Lisbon’s water supply following the destruction of the seventeen fifty-five earthquake.
