The Théodore Monod African Art Museum at Place Soweto occupies a building defined by its Neo-Sudanese architecture, a design style that emerged in the nineteen thirties featuring striking, geometric forms. While the building served as the general administration headquarters for French West Africa starting in nineteen thirty-one, it became the home of this museum after the Institut Fondamental d’Afrique Noire was transferred to the university in nineteen sixty. It is among the oldest institutions of its kind in West Africa, holding a collection of over nine thousand items, including ritual masks, traditional musical instruments, and antique weapons.
