The NUS Baba House at one hundred fifty-seven Neil Road is a three-storey shophouse distinguished by an ultramarine facade decorated with ceramic ornaments. These colorful, hand-cut figures include phoenixes, cranes, and peonies, all crafted with a technique called jian nian to symbolize prosperity, harmony, and fertility. Built around eighteen ninety-five, this townhouse served as the ancestral home of a prominent Peranakan Chinese family, the descendants of shipping tycoon Wee Bin.
