Slovak National Theatre (Historical Building)

cultural

The historical building of the Slovak National Theatre is a Neo-Renaissance structure defined by the busts of composers like Mozart, Liszt, and Shakespeare set into oval openings along its facade. Designed by the Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, the theatre opened in eighteen eighty-six, replacing an earlier city theatre that had stood on the site since seventeen seventy-six. Outside the main entrance, the Ganymede Fountain by sculptor Viktor Tilgner features a central figure of the boy Ganymede being carried to Olympus by an eagle.
