The Green Point Lighthouse is the square tower painted with bold red and white stripes that stands near the edge of the water. First lit on April twelfth, eighteen twenty-four, it is the oldest operational lighthouse in South Africa. Its design came from the German architect Herman Schutte, who worked on the project after acting Governor Sir Rufane Donkin initiated the construction without waiting for formal approval from the British government.
