Igansumun Flood Gate

The Igansumun Flood Gate is a stone structure defined by two arched passages, or hongye, designed to allow water to flow out from the city under the Hanyangdoseong Fortress wall. Built in thirteen ninety-six, the gate sits on some of the lowest ground in the entire capital, serving as a drainage point for a stream that originated north of Namsan Mountain. A boat-shaped stone divider sits between the two arches to split the water as it passes through the wall.
