Mirador del Lavadero

The Lavadero de la Puerta del Sol is a roofed structure defined by six marble columns of Sierra Elvira stone supporting a wooden frame and a tile roof. It sits in a small, quiet plaza in the Realejo district, a location that once marked the city's perimeter near the defensive wall of the Mauror hill. Built in eighteen sixty-two under the direction of architect José Contreras, it was part of a city-wide effort to provide public sanitation facilities for working-class neighborhoods that lacked indoor running water.
