Karacaahmet Cemetery

historic

Karacaahmet Cemetery is a vast, rolling woodland of towering cypress trees that stretches across the hills of Üsküdar. Founded in the middle of the fourteenth century, it is the oldest and largest burial ground in Istanbul, containing the graves of over one million people. The landscape is defined by its dense groves of trees and the weathered stone markers of the Ottoman era, which stand in uneven, moss-covered rows among modern plots.
