Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is defined by the sight of tall, square wind towers, known as barjeel, rising above low-rise houses made of coral, gypsum, and palm wood. Founded in the late eighteen hundreds by merchants from Persia, the district was a residential hub for traders who brought their architectural expertise to the banks of Dubai Creek. These wind towers functioned as natural air conditioning by capturing desert breezes and funneling them into the living spaces below, allowing life to flourish in the heat.
