The Roundhouse is a distinctive circular structure, forty-eight meters in diameter, featuring yellow brick walls and a conical slate roof topped by a central glazed louvre. Built in eighteen forty-six and eighteen forty-seven, it originally functioned as a turntable engine shed for the London and Birmingham Railway. Its design, by architects Robert B. Dockray and Robert Stephenson, included twenty-four cast-iron columns arranged to support the space where locomotives were once turned.
