Margravine Cemetery sits behind a brick-built Victorian Reception House, a small octagonal structure that is the only one of its kind surviving in London. Designed by local architect George Saunders and opened in eighteen sixty-eight, the site occupies land that was once filled with market gardens and orchards. The Hammersmith Burial Board established the grounds after an eighteen sixty-six cholera outbreak forced them to find a new burial site for a growing population.
