El Sereno Open Space Preserve rises from the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains as a steep, ridge-top expanse of chaparral. Named for the two thousand five hundred-foot Mount El Sereno, it functions as a rugged, sun-drenched backdrop to the cities of Los Gatos and Saratoga. The name translates from Spanish to English as night watchman, a title that hints at the mountain’s enduring, silent position above the expanding urban landscape of the South Bay.
