La Casa de Estudillo is a sprawling U-shaped adobe residence defined by its thick, lime-whitewashed walls and a central courtyard. Built between eighteen twenty-seven and eighteen twenty-nine for Presidio commandant José María de Estudillo, this structure served as the social and religious center of San Diego for decades. Its original thirteen rooms were connected by an external veranda, and for many years, a room within the house functioned as the town’s chapel and school.
