La Casa de Machado y Stewart is a single-story adobe building distinguished by its rectangular shape and a porch supported by wooden beams. Built around eighteen thirty-five by José Manuel Machado, a corporal in the local leather-jacket soldiers, this dwelling began as a simple two-room home with walls of sun-dried adobe bricks and a roof of tule thatch. It provided a permanent residence for the Machado family as they moved from the crowded conditions of the nearby presidio to the expanding settlement below.
