Bay Meadows Racetrack once occupied this site, defined by a massive one-mile dirt oval built on what had been a local airfield. Established on November thirteen, nineteen thirty-four, by William P. Kyne, it became the longest continually operating thoroughbred racetrack in California. Kyne turned the venue into a hub for racing innovation, introducing the pari-mutuel wagering system, the daily double, and the first fully enclosed starting gate.
