Morehouse College is the only historically Black liberal arts college for men in the United States. Its campus is anchored by its sixty-one-acre site in southwest Atlanta, marked by a distinct atmosphere of camaraderie that students and alumni refer to as the Morehouse Mystique. This philosophy, championed by longtime president Benjamin Elijah Mays from nineteen forty to nineteen sixty-seven, centers on academic excellence, the elocutionary arts, high moral values, social commitment, and the belief in a higher power.
