The Herndon Home is a two-story mansion of Beaux-Arts Classical design, recognizable by its massive entrance portico supported by paired columns and its flat, balustraded roof. Completed in nineteen ten, the house stands on a rise known as Diamond Hill. It was built for Alonzo Herndon, a man born into slavery in eighteen fifty-eight who later became Atlanta’s first Black millionaire by founding the Atlanta Life Insurance Company.
