The Wheeler Mansion at twenty twenty South Calumet Avenue is one of the few surviving residences from the era when the Near South Side served as a primary home for Chicago’s wealthy families. This Second Empire structure is distinguished by its third-story mansard roof and elaborate cornice, features that have survived despite the neighborhood’s transformation into an industrial zone after eighteen seventy-one.
