The Homewood Cemetery

historic

The Homewood Cemetery is defined by its sweeping, open lawns and minimal stonework, a design intended to provide a serene park-like landscape rather than the crowded rows of traditional burial grounds. Established in eighteen seventy-eight on land that was once part of Judge William Wilkins's estate, the grounds occupy over one hundred and seventy acres in the East End of Pittsburgh. It opened as a non-denominational site to serve the diverse communities of the city, and today it holds the remains of industrial titans, artists, and thousands of everyday citizens who helped shape the local history of the region.
