The University of Washington is anchored by a sprawling seven-hundred-acre campus in the University District of Seattle. You can pick it out by the sheer density of its academic buildings and expansive green spaces that sit between the busy city streets and the western shore of Lake Washington. Founded in eighteen sixty-one, it is one of the oldest universities on the West Coast. Originally located in downtown Seattle, the school moved to this site in eighteen ninety-five after the downtown location became too crowded for its growing student population.
