The Edificio Mercosur is identifiable by its grand, eclectic façade that blends neoclassical, Beaux-Arts, and Art Nouveau styles along the Rambla Wilson. Opened on December thirty, nineteen oh nine, as the Hotel-Teatro-Casino del Parque Urbano, it originally served as a luxury destination for the city's elite. Architect Pierre Lorenzi designed the building to mirror the seaside hotels of the French coast, establishing it as a social hub that famously housed the first casino in Latin America.
