The Forte di Santa Tecla sits by the old port of Sanremo with a distinct triangular plan and thick stone walls that rise toward the sea. Built by the Republic of Genoa between seventeen fifty-five and seventeen fifty-six, the fortress was designed with one primary purpose: to suppress the people of Sanremo. Following a popular uprising in seventeen fifty-three, the Genoese authorities commissioned military engineers Giacomo De Sicre and Alberto Medoni to create a structure that could keep the local population in check.
