Republic Square is defined by its grand ensemble of buildings constructed from pink and yellow tufa stone, a volcanic rock that gives the architecture a distinctive warm glow. Designed by architect Alexander Tamanyan in nineteen twenty-four, the square integrates neoclassical urban planning with traditional Armenian stone-carving motifs. Its layout consists of two primary sections: an oval roundabout featuring a central mosaic patterned like a traditional Armenian carpet, and a trapezoid-shaped area containing a large musical fountain.
