The Mercado Municipal de São Paulo, known locally as the Mercadão, is a vast, two-story structure defined by its soaring arched windows and a heavy facade of Ionic and Doric columns. Inaugurated on January twenty-fifth, nineteen thirty-three, the building was designed by architect Francisco Ramos de Azevedo to consolidate the city's food trade into a singular, grand civic space. Its eclectic design draws inspiration from great European markets, intended to signal the status of a rapidly industrializing city during the early twentieth century.
