Borisova Gradina is recognized by its dense network of walking paths that shift from manicured flowerbeds near the city center to a thick, forest-like expanse as you move further away. As the oldest and largest park in Sofia, it began in eighteen eighty-two when Mayor Ivan Hadzhienov hired the Swiss gardener Daniel Neff to establish a nursery on what was then the city's outskirts. Neff spent years turning the former pastureland and military training grounds into a public garden, planting thousands of trees and creating an irrigation system.
