The Biosphere is a massive, open-air geodesic dome rising seventy-six meters in diameter on Saint Helen’s Island. Designed by architect Buckminster Fuller for the nineteen sixty-seven World Exposition, the structure is composed of an intricate, interlocking latticework of steel tubes. While it once supported a transparent acrylic skin, an accidental fire in nineteen seventy-six burned the plastic away, leaving the exposed steel skeleton that remains visible today.
