Carlos Gardel

monument

The neighborhood of Manrique in Medellín is identified by the frequent sight of murals depicting Carlos Gardel and the lingering sound of tango music echoing from local bars and cafes. This working-class area, located on the city's northeastern hillside, became the center of Medellín’s tango culture following the death of the famous Argentine singer on June twenty-fourth, nineteen thirty-five. Gardel perished in a tragic plane crash at the nearby Olaya Herrera Airport, an event that tied the identity of this district to his musical legacy forever.
